Backcountry Skiing

Activity

Aside from the opportunity to ski new terrain in beautiful, isolated locations, backcountry skiing, ski mountaineering or ski touring can offer a variety of advantages over snowshoes when accessing mountainous terrain during the winter months of the year. Chief among these advantages is weight distribution, fun and speed (particularly on the return), but with the disadvantages of needing to do switchbacks considerably more often on steep terrain and then needing to climb in ski boots. The following locations can make for good backcountry skiing or ski touring destinations in the winter when avalanche conditions are suitable.
